Photoluminescent Requirements

Photoluminescent and self-luminous stairwell markings and signage are important for emergency egress and wayfinding in buildings. In the event of a power outage or other emergency, traditional electrical lighting may not be operational. Photoluminescent markings and signage, which are charged by ambient light and glow in the dark, provide a visual path for building occupants to safely evacuate the building. They also help to clearly identify stairwells and exits, making it easier for people to navigate the building during an emergency or when visibility is limited.

Approved luminous egress path markings delineating the exit path shall be provided in high-rise buildings of Groups A, B, E, I-1, M or R-1 occupancies in accordance with this section. Egress path markings shall be provided in interior exit stairways, interior exit ramps and exit passageways, in accordance with Sections 1025.2.1 through 1025.2.6.
